Home tucker top of mind for Aussie biz travellers

After family and home, Australian business people miss home cooking, pets and pillows when away for work

Australians are more attached to their home comforts than the rest of the world according to new research by Regus, the global workplace provider, which quizzed business travellers about the things they miss the most when on the road.

Australian business travellers are more likely than their global counterparts to miss their family (73%) and home (49%). When it comes to the smaller things in life, Australians yearn for home cooking (26%), their pets (18%), and their comfy pillow (16%). Interestingly, despite the renowned Australian climate, only 8% miss the Australian weather.

Small business workers are less willing to travel for work, with 29% of small business (less than 49 employees) respondents stating this compared to 20% of employees in larger firms (more than 250 employees).

Industry wise, healthcare and medicine professionals are the most open to business travel, with 62% of healthcare workers saying they are willing to travel, closely followed by those in the media and marketing industry (52%). This compares to only 37% of ICT workers and 36% from banking, insurance and finance.

Other findings show:

  • In Australia, four out of ten respondents (42%) say they are more willing to travel for work, compared to ten years ago, while 27% say they are less willing.
  • Globally, Generation X and Baby Boomers are less likely to be willing to travel for work with family commitments taking their toll.
  • Generation X, who are most likely to have young children, are also the most likely to miss their family (73%).

CEO of Regus Australia and NZ, Paul Migliorini said: “As anybody who travels for work knows, being away from your nearest and dearest, not to mention those home comforts, is a stressful experience. At Regus we support a huge number of business travellers who use our drop in business lounges at over 1800 locations worldwide – so we often hear first hand accounts of what people miss when away from home.

“Luckily there is an increasing range of technology, from video conferencing to collaboration software, that enable businesses to avoid travel and help keep employees sleeping on their own pillows. Regus operates the world’s largest network of HD video conferencing suites and we are seeing increasing use from companies here in Australia using this technology to avoid overseas travel. Overall, less travel is a win-win – businesses save big on costs, and workers get to enjoy their home cooked meals.”
