Irish workers are masters of many trades, according to Regus survey
Research identifies growing trend of ‘portfolio job holders’
Over half of Irish professionals (52%) say they are seeing more people in their industry with multiple jobs compared to five years ago. This is according to the latest research from Regus, the workspace provider with centres in Dublin and Cork. These ‘portfolio job holders’ work for more than one employer, potentially offering more than one service.
The survey, which canvassed the opinions of over 22,000 business people across the globe, showed that the proportion of portfolio job holders in Ireland is significantly higher than many other European countries including France, (37%), Germany (43%) and Belgium (39%) and broadly in line with the UK (53%).
The findings show that working practices in Ireland have changed considerably, even in as little as five years, with many Irish firms becoming far more nimble in the way that they hire staff. Rather than opt for full-time support, many are choosing to ramp-up capacity to deal with peak periods, outsourcing tasks to individuals that don’t necessarily work within the typical 9-5 framework.
Flexible, professional workspaces are facilitating this approach to work. Portfolio job holders, are understandably reluctant, or indeed unable, to commit to their own individual long-term, leased office.
Karen Lawlor, Country Manager for Ireland at Regus “In Ireland, the days of holding one job for life have gone. The tendency towards flexible working - including hours, location, and staff contracts - is gathering pace.
“There are many reasons for this change, but certainly it suits businesses and professionals alike; both are increasingly looking for more flexibility than the traditional full-time work contract may afford.”
